Ford Fusion Hybrid Taxi Looks.. Really Good!

Ford Fusion Hybrid Taxi Looks.. Really Good!

640 × 349

Hot on the heels of the Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid, Ford are showing the Fusion Hybrid taxi. While not that interesting in itself, the fact that the taxi uses elements from the Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid is slightly more interesting.

Ford says the Ford Fusion Hybrid taxi, shown in NYC livery in the image, is a first. Not only does it feature a hybrid powertrain, it also uses the same brakes and suspension setup as the upcoming Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid. The thought is that these harder-wearing components will offer value to high mileage vehicles like taxis as well as to cops.

The higher ride height of the cop suspension will come in useful on gnarly city streets while the harder wearing shocks and struts should last much longer. The average city taxi’s brakes can go through a lot of punishment, so having upgraded units that won’t have to work so hard to bring the vehicle to a stop should offer a much longer operating life.

As an extra benefit, Ford believes the Ford Fusion Hybrid taxi will offer similar fuel economy to the Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid. That is an estimated 40 mpg city, 36  highway and 38 combined. That alone will be good news for taxi drivers!

2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid

The 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid is a stalwart of the sedan lineup and one of the few to make it past the shift to crossovers. It’s a long-established model with quite the track record and delivers a comfortable, reassuring ride in all trim levels.

The design is modern Ford. The shark-like grille, angled lights and curved hood are typical of all Ford models right now. Continuing curves over the windshield, roof and trunk lid creates a nice profile without limiting headroom in back. Panel details all over adds interest too.

Inside, the recycled upholstery delivers comfort and quality in equal measure. There is enough space for four adults without having to squeeze. The driving position is comfortable and supported and everything is well laid-out and easy to use. All in all, it is a very usable interior.

Under that curved hood, the 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid uses a 2.0-litre four cylinder engine alone with twin electric motors. Lithium-ion battery packs provide charge for around 22 miles of electric only driving. Charging takes 3 to 4 hours art a 240 volt outlet or 7 hours on 110 volts. Combined, the car is rated at 43 mpg city, 41 highway and 42 combined.
