Two Brilliant Reasons Why the Mustang GT Has Hydraulic Steering

The Ford GT is a $400,000-plus high-performance supercar filled with adrenaline-inducing technology. It has a racing style profile, carbon fibre chassis and bodywork, pushrod suspension, carbon-ceramic brakes, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a direct-injected twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 generating at least 600 horsepower.

We haven’t talked about the best part, the hydraulic steering. What’s the big fuss you ask? You may notice something with modern cars’ steering feel. It’s vague and unsatisfying. Blame electric steering for the problem. While this technology is easier to equip with computer-controlled self-steering systems, cuts down on drag, and increases fuel economy, it reduces the natural steering feel associated with hydraulic steering setups.

Naturally, we felt blessed when Ford debuted the 2015 GT with the hydraulic steering. Any car enthusiast and skilled driver would prefer the natural feedback of hydraulic steering. Ferrari and McLaren have stuck with hydraulic assist for this reason.

However, that’s not the reason why it ended up in the GT. The active suspension system lowers the ride height by 15mm when in Track mode further enhancing its handling capabilities. Chief Engineer, Jamal Hameedi at Ford Performance, won’t reveal exactly how this system works except it consists of a rocker and two springs. The height-adjustable suspensions use the same hydraulic pump so it makes perfect sense why the GT would have hydraulic assisted steering.

This is the kind of engineering behind Ford that makes the brand go further. Also, this is the comprehensive thinking we admire in supercars; driver-centric, sensible and incorporating old-school methods in exciting ways to produce a superior ride performance.
