How to Renew an Expired Driver's License in Ontario (2024)

How to Renew an Expired Driver's License in Ontario (2024)

So you let your license expire? It’s not the end of the world, there are just a few hoops you’re going to have to jump through which can be more or less hassle depending on what type of license you had and how long it’s been since the expiry. Read on and we’ll explain everything you need to know to renew an expired Driver's License in Ontario.

Re-Applying For a Driver's License

Obviously the first step when you’re trying to renew a license is to apply for a new one. There are two ways to do this either online or in person at a local service Ontario center, depending on how long it’s been since the license expired you may have to do the application in person, usually within the last year.

Either way, you’ll need to bring a few things: a second form of legal identification, and you’ll need to have a picture for the card, if you’re applying in person they’ll take the picture but if you’re applying online you’ll need to take a picture that follows their exact guidelines.

If you had a full G license then you can go through the usual application process, however, if you had a G1 or G2 license expire then you need to start the whole process from the beginning, including a written and driving test.

Take a Written or Driven Test

Even if you had a full G license you still may not be free from a required test, Ontario has a set time period that will require different levels of testing:

If it’s been between 1-3 years since the license expired then you’ll be required to take and pass the requirements of a vision test and if it’s been between 3-10 years then you’ll need to take a vision test as well as a written theory test and a driving test.

Over 10 years since the expiry and you're out of luck as the license is considered fully lapsed and you’ll need to start the process from the beginning again.

Pay the Fee

The process for updating a password isn’t free however the fees are not extortionate, typically to apply and have a new license card delivered is around $90, plus you may be charged extra for the driving and written tests if you are required to pay them.

Once everything is cleared your new license should arrive in the mail by the end of the month and you can get back out onto the road.
