Next Dodge Journey may use Alfa Romeo platform

640 × 480
There are a lot of changes on the horizon for FCA brand vehicles, one of which is a potential change of platform for the Dodge Journey. Rumour central has suggested that the next generation of the Dodge crossover will be built on the Alfa Romeo Giulia. This could be good news for the Journey.

The merging of Fiat and Alfa technology into FCA’s stable is gathering pace and from our experiences so far have been a positive influence. This latest one could bring the quality, stability and reliability of an established Giulia to underpin one of Dodge’s central sellers.

If rumours are true, the Dodge Journey will have rear wheel drive, with all-wheel drive as an option. It could also feature an eight speed automatic transmission and the same turbocharged 2.0-litre engine we will be seeing in the new Jeep Wrangler. Details are, of course, unconfirmed.

What we do know is that the new Dodge Journey has been delayed until 2019. Originally slated for a 2016 launch, the vehicle was delayed a while and will see another two years’ service before being replaced. What that format will be in 2019 is anybody’s guess and Dodge are certainly not letting anything slip right now.

2016 Dodge Journey
There isn’t much more to say about the 2016 Dodge Journey that I didn’t say last week. It is a solid crossover with a good design, reliable engines, decent inside space and an offering that’s a little different from the competition. It can also comfortably go off road, something the competition finds hard to match.

The masculine design is quite boxy but in an acceptable SUV-like way. The front end is handsome, with the lower fascia standing out over the main grille with some very nice looking lighting. Attractive hood detailing and wheel arches and a slightly sloped roof give a sporty feel to the design even if the Journey isn’t a sporty vehicle.

Inside, there are two or three rows that will comfortably seat five or seven. Space is not at a premium, neither is quality. Recent revisions have seen the build quality improve in leaps and bounds, so the 2016 Dodge Journey now offers a good cabin for the money. It is comfortable and easy to live with, as well as having lots of storage and cargo space in back.

Under that attractive hood is either a 2.4-litre four cylinder that produces 173 hp and 166 lb-ft of torque or a 3.6-litre V6 that produces 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both use an automatic transmission to send power to the front wheels. AWD is an option.
