Mazda releasing the 2021 BT-50 truck this week

Despite being very well known for cars, Mazda has actually been making vans and trucks for decades. We just haven’t been able to get them here. The 2021 BT-50 might change all that.

The 2021 Mazda BT-50 is the latest in a long line of trucks from the Japanese automaker. After a run of trucks based on the Ford Ranger design, Mazda has now switched to using the Isuzu D-Max.

The Isuzu is a truck with a massive reputation around the world for its ruggedness, reliability and all-round capability. A favourite of farmers and ranchers across the world with the kind of reputation reserved for the Land Rover Defender or Toyota Land Cruiser.

The 2021 Mazda BT-50 hopes to build on that and the truck is being revealed this week on June 17.

The image above was provided by Mazda as part of the launch preparations. It’s all we know about this new version of the truck. We do have a good idea about the rest of it but it has yet to be confirmed by Mazda.

We know the truck has switched from using Ford platforms to Isuzu. We think it will first be launched with the Isuzu 3.0-litre four cylinder diesel in global guise with 188 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. That engine will use a six speed automatic or manual transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels.

We suspect that like when Mazda worked with Ford, the new truck will use the entire underpinning of the Isuzu the same way it did with the Ranger. Where it will differ is in the design and cabin. Two things Mazda does very well.

Like its Isuzu progenitor, we think the 2021 Mazda BT-50 will eventually be available in single cab and various double cab variants. It will be a more masculine design, which could be interesting to see given how good the Isuzu looks.

Mazda had previously said that applying their ‘Kodo’ design language to the truck would be a challenge but one they were up for. I like every design Mazda has come up with, even the larger CX-9 SUV designs so I am very interested in how the BT-50 looks.

We only have a short time to wait as the reveal is just two days away.

If you like the look of the truck, keep an eye on Mazda of Hamilton, 1977 Upper James Street Hamilton, ON L9B 1K8 for availability and pricing.
