Kia CV Electric Crossover coming this spring

Kia CV Electric Crossover coming this spring

Just after Kia announced they were retiring a couple of their sedans, the Korean automaker also announced the imminent arrival of a new crossover. The Kia CV Electric Crossover is a brand new model we have seen in spy shots and rumours for ages now and it seems we don’t have long to wait to see it for real.

It isn’t actually going to be called the Kia CV Electric Crossover though. The CV name is an internal name. Kia has yet to tell us what the new model will be called.

Kia CV Electric Crossover

We don’t know too much about the Kia CV Electric Crossover as yet.

We know it’s a new model. We know it will be using a new platform Kia designed with Hyundai and Genesis specifically for electrics and we know that Kia has used the Jaguar I-Pace and Tesla Model 3 as benchmarks.

The platform is called the E-GMP modular EV platform. It will eventually underpin a total of 7 new EVs over the next five years as well as more for Hyundai and for Genesis.

Two features of the E-GMP modular EV platform are worthy of note. First, a battery pack with around 310 miles of range. Second, the ability to charge those batteries from zero to 80% in 20 minutes.

If those two stats are true, the Kia CV and any sibling vehicles coming from it could begin leading the way in electric motoring. Given the traditional value price point of Kia, it could open up electric motoring to everyone.

Inside the Kia CV

Recent spy shots provided a little insight into what to expect in the Kia CV. The test car had a wide curved screen for instruments and a dial for gear selection. That could hint at a non-CVT transmission which would be great.

The rest of the interior looks very modern with nothing too out there or futuristic. It will very likely deliver the same high quality look and feel we get with Kia’s other cars.

High quality materials, superb finishing, comfortable seating, lots of head and leg room, decent cargo space and lots of technology options should be standard too.

None of this has been confirmed as yet. It’s all information gleaned from spy shots, rumours and supposition. As spring isn’t that far away, we potentially don’t have that long to wait until we know exactly what’s in store.

If that range and charging time is true, it could be a genuine game changer. A 310 mile range from what will be a mid-market EV? The ability to charge up to 80% in 20 minutes? That would be awesome!

While we don’t yet know if that’s from a fast charger or 240v, we will have to wait and see. Either way, it’s a great time to be an EV fan!
