Ford Focus RS production ending next month

The Ford Focus RS has been at the top end of performance tuning for such a long time that it seems like it has always been there. From the Ford Escort RS 2000, through Fiesta RS to Focus RS, the Rally Sport moniker has meant a formerly sensible hatchback being given a healthy dose of lunacy and being let loose on the road. It seems Ford are ending that next month.

The 2018 Ford Focus RS apparently ends production on 6 April, for a while at least.

It isn’t all bad news though. To celebrate the demise of the RS, Ford are planning a special 50 car Heritage Edition. The somewhat bad news is that this is currently a UK-only release. That won’t stop enterprising fans importing them but it does mean the driving position will be on the wrong side.

2018 Ford Focus RS Heritage Edition
The 2018 Ford Focus RS Heritage Edition will be a very limited run of 50 units. They will feature a unique Tief Orange colour scheme and some special tuning parts from Mountune.

‘The RS brand is hugely important to Ford and is recognized across the globe, however it has a special place in the hearts of UK Ford fans,’ said Andy Barratt, chairman and managing director, Ford of Britain. ‘This latest model is the best RS we've ever produced, so it seems a fitting tribute as we approach its 50th anniversary.’

While Ford ST and RS models were very popular in the UK, it isn’t just there that they sold well. The US and Canada also saw quite a few sales of Focus RS and it will be sorely missed here too.

The Focus RS is only available in two colours, Nitrous Blue and Race Red so this new orange colour really is going to stand out. With the standard Focus look with some extra body panels added, including that cool looking rear spoiler, the RS has always been a wolf in sheep’s clothing. The new Tief Orange paintjob is going to change that but will be hugely popular nonetheless.

Under the hood, the current turbocharged 2.3-litre four cylinder remains. The ‘standard’ RS delivers 350 hp but with the special Mountune tweaks, the 2018 Ford Focus RS Heritage Edition will boast 370 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. The current AWD system and six speed transmission will apparently remain.

I will be sorry to see the end of the Focus RS but that doesn’t mean it is the end forever. We have seen many such models ebb and flow as the market changes and automakers shift priorities to adjust. While it may be the end of the RS for now, I do not for a second believe it is the end for good.
