Top 5 Cars With The Best Resale Value After 5 Years of Ownership
Posted on March 5, 2024
You’ve probably heard this before, but when you buy a new car, it begins to lose value as soon as you drive off the car lot with it. That’s called depreciation, and some vehicles depreciate faster than others. Which vehicles have the lowest depreciation – and therefore which cars have the best resale value – after five years of ownership?
According to a depreciation study by the analytics group iSeeCars, these are the top five cars with the best resale value.
5. Honda Civic
Generally considered a dependable, long-lasting car, seeing the Honda Civic on this list doesn’t surprise us one bit. The Civic is also one of the best-selling cars on the market, offers excellent fuel economy, and is fun to drive! The Honda Civic only lost 16.3% of its value over 5 years, making it a sound investment if your plan is to resell in a few years.
4. Toyota Tacoma
The Toyota Tacoma is a pickup truck that, like the Civic, has a reputation for dependability and fuel economy. Pickup trucks are one of the most popular vehicle styles in Canada, so it makes sense that this midsize model is high on the list. Over five years Tacoma only depreciated 14.9% on average.
3. Porsche 911
The study notes that during the pandemic the demand for sports cars increased when people were looking for something fun to distract them from their reality. Not only did the Porsche 911 come in third in the five-year depreciation list at 14.6%, but in the last 3 years, the same models appreciated in value by 5.7%. If you bought a Porsche 911 in the last few years, you could actually make money selling it!
2. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
If you’ve ever looked into vehicle depreciation, you probably already know that the Jeep Wrangler has always had a reputation for holding its value. The four door Unlimited only depreciated 8.7% over five years. Along with the Porsche 911, the Wrangler Unlimited enjoyed an increase in resale value in the last three years: +2%. If you’ve been considering an SUV, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is a great option.
1. Jeep Wrangler (Two-Door)
The original two-door Jeep Wrangler held onto the top spot (the Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited held the top two spots in 2021 as well) with ease. Depreciating a mere 7.3%, a Wrangler is your best option for an off-road vehicle investment. You’d be hard-pressed to find a Jeep owner that doesn’t absolutely love driving their vehicle. The proof is on the roads: Jeeps are everywhere in Canada, and clearly for good reason.
When you’re shopping for a new or used vehicle, it pays to look at stats like depreciation value. Buying a car is a large purchase and you want to ensure you have as much information as possible before you make your decision.
