2018 Ford F-150
Posted on January 10, 2017
The new 2018 Ford F-150 was showing at Detroit last week and we got to take a good look at it. The new Ford truck gets some new styling options and a diesel engine that sounds ideal for owners who do big miles or haul big loads.
The styling update is a well-considered one. The F-150 is already the best looking truck on the market so any changes had to keep the spirit of that while updating it enough to count as an update without alienating all of you who love the current look. I think it works. The current truck is still recognizable and it is also new enough to be considered an updated model.
The front end gets a new two part grille that softens the face without taking too much away. New headlights also feature that are instantly familiar but also look new. It creates a look more akin to the F-150’s Super Duty siblings. A new front bumper completes the facelift and somehow makes the truck wider than it actually is.
The main story is the new diesel engine that will feature in the 2018 Ford F-150. It is a 3.0-litre turbodiesel V6 engine that also features in the very capable Land Rover Discovery Tdv6. It was developed as a joint venture between Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroën and will likely feature in a range of vehicles over the coming couple of years.
Ford were not very forthcoming about power but the engine delivers around 360 lb-ft of torque in the Discovery so we would expect something around that mark in the F-150.
The current 3.5-litre gas V6 is also being changed to a 3.3-litre normally aspirated version. Ford says output will be around 282 hp and 253 lb-ft of torque, which is about the same as it gets now. The other two engines, the 2.5-litre EcoBoost and 5.0-litre V8 both get some tweaks to increase power. The truck will also use a 10 speed automatic transmission that will send power to the rear or all wheels.
As well as the refresh and new engine, Ford are adding a few new toys to the truck. New features will include adaptive cruise control, start/stop engines to improve gas mileage, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection and other new tech.
We didn’t get to see the interior of the 2018 Ford F-150 but we do know two new colours are coming, called Dark Marsala and Navy Pier. Any layout changes or feature changes were not mentioned at the show.
The 2018 Ford F-150 goes on sale in fall this year with pricing and specifics to be advised. In the meantime, the current range of F-150 trucks is still going strong. Visit Northway Ford Lincoln
