2016 Ford Focus RS deliveries begin

I have spoken about the 2016 Ford Focus RS before in quietly excited tones. As a fan of the ‘hot hatch’ this fast Ford is one of my most hotly anticipated vehicles of this year. So it is with great excitement that I learned that the first delivers of the 2016 Ford Focus RS have begun, in the U.S. at least.

I still don’t know when Canadian deliveries will begin but it can’t be long now!

The 2016 Ford Focus RS is a revolution. It tackles the traditional difficulty of taking a front wheel drive car, filling the engine bay full of raw power and then expecting those front wheels to drive and steer at the same time. As we have seen with other front wheel drive hot hatches, it doesn’t always work too well.

The 2016 Ford Focus RS is different. It’s all-wheel drive and can put all its 345 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque into good use at once. All while being able to control the car into a corner, or drift if you prefer.

The 2016 Ford Focus RS isn’t just a Focus with a new engine, some clever four wheel drive tech and a bodykit bolted on. It’s an all new car. While there is definitely a bodykit on the car, it is all necessary and performs a valuable service. The big front grille allows as much air as possible into the intercooler, the side vents help cool the front brakes, the front splitter helps with downforce and the rear rooftip spoiler does the same for the rear.

The interior is also performance oriented but doesn’t sacrifice comfort and practicality completely to fit the mould. Seating is very comfortable especially as they are bucket seats by Recaro. The dashboard is well laid out with everything within easy reach, controls are solid and reassuring and passenger space is pretty decent for this kind of car.

The 2016 Ford Focus RS isn’t entirely frill-free. The Canadian version comes standard with Ford SYNC3 with an 8 inch touchscreen, climate control, heated Recaros and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup2 tyres. All options that will cost extra in the U.S. Given how cheap the car is given what it can do, that’s a good deal indeed!

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine delivers that 345 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque with ease. It does it through a six speed manual transmission and a very clever all-wheel drive setup. The chassis has been stiffened, the brakes uprated, subframe bolstered and the steering tightened and made more responsive. All combine to make a very exciting drive.
