The end of the Fusion means no more sedans for Ford

Ford ended production of the Fusion on July 31, marking the end of sedan production for the automaker. The Lincoln MKZ has also ceased production, meaning the Lincoln Continental is the only sedan left for Ford brands in North America.

It’s a sad day but one we knew was coming.

The Mexican factory in Hermosillo that made the Fusion and MKZ will be retooled to build the new Ford Bronco Sport. The Lincoln Continental will remain in production until the end of this year and then it really will be the end of sedans and hatchbacks for any Ford-owned brand.

The Ford Mustang will be the only non-crossover, SUV or truck manufactured by the company.

2020 Ford Fusion

The 2020 Ford Fusion is a classic sedan. Traditional in shape, size and configuration and it worked well during its 14 years in production. This last model was redesigned a couple of years ago but still looks as fresh now as it did back then.

The design is sleek, with a shark-like front end, signature grille and light setup, curved hood with detailing, panel detailing down the side above the sill, raked windshield and curved roof. A tidy rear end curved around a subtle trunk to a pair of lights and a nice moulded bumper.

The interior was a showcase of how much Ford has learned about cabins over the years. It’s light, airy and spacious with comfortable seating, decent leg and head room and trunk space in the rear. It isn’t as large as some sedans but can comfortably sit adult passengers in each row.

Under the skin

Under the hood of the 2020 Ford Fusion is one of several engines. A turbocharged 1.5-litre four cylinder with 181 hp, a turbocharged 2.0-litre four with 245 hp and a 2.5-litre four with 175 hp.

A hybrid Fusion with a 2.0-litre four cylinder and electric motor combined with a CVT transmission was also available. Finally, the Fusion Energi was a plug-in hybrid with 9kWh battery along with the gas engine for 26 miles of electric-only drive.

The chassis and suspension setup of the Fusion has always been good. It struck that fine balance between being a firm ride and also being comfortable and forgiving. It corners well, handles highways with ease and is generally very easy to drive. It is these characteristics that made it so popular.

With a five star safety rating, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitors as standard and the option to add adaptive cruise control, it’s a safe car too!
