How to Price a Used Car for Sale [2022]

If you’re planning to sell your car but don’t know much about cars, how do you actually price a used car for sale? How can you know whether you’re being lowballed or being offered a good deal?

That‘s the topic of today’s post. We’re going to share a few tips to help you accurately price a used car for sale andassess any offers you receive.

If you don’t plan to sell to a dealership, you’ll need these tips!

Sorting the good offers from the bad

Despite inflation and everything costing more than it once did, people still want something for nothing.

You’ll quickly find when you advertise your car for sale, what you thought as a sensible price, seems outrageous to some. They want something for nothing and think just because you’re selling your car, you must be desperate enough to accept a lowball offer.

Don’t.

Value your car before advertising it

The easiest way to avoid accepting a low offer and to have confidence when you price a used car for sale is to research prices before you advertise.

It doesn’t take long and should give you everything you need to set a realistic price.

We tend to recommend checking your car on Carfax, Kelley Blue Book, Auto Trader, eBay, Craigslist and any local car marketplaces you know of.

Compare your exact make, model and trim and get as close to the mileage and condition as possible.

See what prices are being asked, note the lowest and the highest of cars the closest to yours in your area. Then pick an average out of those numbers.

If you’re in a hurry to sell, price your car at the lower end of the scale. If you’re looking for the most money to buy another and don’t mind the sale taking a little time, price it higher.

Just remember, car pricing should not be set in stone.

Be prepared to haggle and come down a little, but only a little.

The current used car market

The current used car market is strong right now. Shortages in new cars has driven demand for used models, which is driving up prices.

While you still need to price your car sensibly, you’ll probably be surprised at just how much cars are selling for right now.

That’s good news if you’re selling a second car with no plans to buy another but you’ll fund it an unpleasant surprise once you begin your own car shopping!

If you want to avoid the hassle of selling your car privately, just sell your car to a dealership.

We offer close to market prices, will pay directly into your bank and can seal the deal within an hour or two.

It’s the easiest way to sell a car right now!
