New Kia K8 gets more power and AWD option

New Kia K8 gets more power and AWD option

The new Kia K8 will be replacing our old favourite, the Kia Cadenza soon. The new sedan is great news for those of us who like a little variety in our cars as it retains the sedan shape rather than switching to crossover.

While we have known what the Kia K8 looks like for a while, we now know a little of what will drive it.

We now know that the Kia K8 will get a new 3.5-litre V6 engine capable of 296 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque.

That’s an improvement over the outgoing Cadenza of around 6 hp and 12 lb-ft of torque. Not much of an improvement, but still an improvement.

What’s of more interest is the inclusion of an AWD option.

2022 Kia K8

The Kia K8 is replacing the Cadenza as its everyday luxury sedan. It’s an amazing shape with low front end and very aero profile. The new front grille and Kia badge showcase the new design philosophy of the company and shows it’s going in the right direction.

The car is slightly larger than the Cadenza which should translate into more interior and trunk space.

The cabin also looks amazing. Kia cabins have been going from strength to strength but this is a new high. Materials look superb, the dashboard and driving position look top class and some of the features are genuinely innovative.

We particularly like the ‘smart support’ option that makes the driver’s seat more supportive at speed or when you’re in sport mode. That’s a nice touch that shows someone at Kia is thinking about the user.

There is also a new 14 speaker audio system being launched with the K8. It’s called Meridian and offers enhanced audio compared to the Cadenza. The K8 also gets a 12 inch heads-up display and a pair of 12 inch screens.

Adaptive cruise control and surround view cameras will also feature.

Under the hood

The Kia K8 retains the 2.5-litre four cylinder as an engine option with its 195 hp and 183 lb-ft of torque. The new 3.5 will come as a standard gas engine or with liquid propane injection (LPI). The LPI system lowers power output but offers a cleaner fuel with much lower emissions.

Both engines will use an 8 speed automatic transmission to send power to the wheels. Interestingly, the top tier version of the K8 will have the option for AWD. That’s great news for us up north as AWD has a definite benefit during winter. The addition of this drive option is very welcome!

New suspension elements have also apparently been added to the K8 to make it handle better. Combined with the AWD, this should be a top performer in Canadian winters!

The Kia K8 hits dealership in South Korea in April before travelling across the world and landing in Canada.

We won’t know when we’ll be getting the Kia K8 but we know we’re getting it. Register your interest at Grimsby Kia, 435 South Service Road Grimsby, ON L3M 4E8.
