A Completely New Electric Jeep SUV was Teased

Jeep, via Stellantis has offered a teaser image of a new electric Jeep SUV. It was part of their Dare Forward 2030 strategy presentation and made quite a stir.

“We’re pushing real hard to build on what’s natural for Jeep, and our electrification adds to our four-wheel-drive capability,” said Jim Morrison, Jeep’s CEO, in an exclusive interview with TheDetroitBureau.com last month.

“We say ‘Jeep is freedom electrified,’ and it’s making the vision about being true to our brand and delivering on freedom in a way that underwrites capability improvements.”

It’s very obviously a Jeep, with a smaller version of a Cherokee or Compass, even if it isn’t a Cherokee.

It’s both more rounded and more angular and looks very much of the time. It’s an attractive vehicle, even if it is just an image right now.

New Electric Jeep

I like the similarities between the current lineup with key differences to mark it out as something different.

The front grille still looks like the signature Jeep grille, but is filled in rather than open. The narrow lights are still there, as is the larger lower sill arrangement, flared fenders and other design flourishes we expect from Jeep.

There’s even a hood bulge, although that has to be purely aesthetic. It’s probably the least successful elements of the design but it isn’t ugly.

At the back, it’s more a Compass than Cherokee. The ‘X’ shaped lights, panel detailing around the hatch and upswing at the lower sill all scream Compass but with key differences.

There was no word as to drivetrain, batteries, range or anything technical. Just the showing of the image.

Production of this new model is slated for November 2022.

Stellantis going 100% electric in Europe

That same Dare Forward 2030 strategy included a statement that Stellantis would be 100% electric in Europe by 2030.

North America would be 50% electric and would eventually follow, but the European statement was the most significant.

To achieve this, the automaker is planning 75 EVs over the coming 8 years and plans for sales of over 5 million EVs per year by 2030.

That’s ambitious, but achievable, as long as the world and the production chain don’t deteriorate further between now and then!

"Dare Forward 2030 inspires us to become so much more than we've ever been," said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. "We are expanding our vision, breaking the limits, and embracing a new mindset, one that seeks to transform all facets of mobility for the betterment of our families, communities, and the societies in which we operate."

Models will include more 4xe models for the Grand Cherokee, Cherokee and Wagoneer models.

We also expect Dodge to showcase a new EV within the next couple of years. Stellantis said that Dodge would retain its performance identity, so expect high performance EVs in the not-too distant future.

Ram is still on track to deliver a new EV ProMaster in 2023 and a Ram 1500 EV in 2024.

No further details were provided though.

Chrysler will also be delivering full EVs over the coming years, with the Chrysler Airflow being first among them.

A fully electric Pacifica is expected to follow, with all models being electric by the end of 2028.

Stellantis has some catching up to do if it is to keep up with competitors but it’s good to see there are concrete plans.
