Kia Replacing Sedona with New Carnival

Kia Replacing Sedona with New Carnival

The Kia Sedona is one of two viable minivans on the market right now. Alongside the Chrysler Pacifica, the Sedona has been a stalwart of moving families for years now. But Kia has said it will be replaced with a new Carnival model.

This change is all part of Kia’s brand transformation that also includes four new PHEVs and new product line of Purpose-Built Vehicles, or PBVs.

In name only

The purpose of this transformation is to differentiate itself more from sister company Hyundai. Part of that is happening by changing the logo and some of the models.

The good news is that while the Sedona name will change, not a lot else will. It’s only in North America that you can find a Sedona. Most other regions have the Carnival.

The name change is all part of that brand shakeup and it is slated for 2022.

The 2022 Kia Carnival

The 2022 Kia Carnival will apparently have LX, EX and SX trims and be front wheel drive. It will have a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 290 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. According to a leaked VIN decoder anyway.

The new Carnival is also supposed to share the same platform as the Sorento. That means it may grow a little in size, which will be good news for passengers.

There also will be the usual design and technology updates and perhaps revisions in interior trim and space but the overall look and feel of the Carnival will be largely the same as the Sedona.

2021 Kia Sedona

The current 2021 Kia Sedona could be the last one so it’s a good job we like it. The minivan has an unassuming design with simple panels, rounded edges and a pleasing profile.

Under the hood is a 3.3-litre V6 engine with an 8 speed automatic transmission sending power to the front wheels.

Inside, the van has three rows of seating with plenty of room for people and cargo. The rear row folds down to open up the trunk for even bigger cargo and offers impressive space for the size.

The second row can be upgraded to captain’s chairs in the SX trim, making journeys much more enjoyable. Standard seating is still comfortable though.

Materials and finishing quality are high with lots of soft touch surfaces, premium feeling upholstery and solid hardware. There are lots of cubbies and small storage areas too, ideal for family life.

Overall, the 2021 Kia Sedona is a great bet if you need to move people around in comfort.

We don’t expect the Carnival to bring much upheaval except some tweaks here and there, which is a good thing we think as the existing minivan delivers on every count.
