Jeep Wrangler to feature diesel engine and new transmission

Jeep Wrangler to feature diesel engine and new transmission

We learned a little while ago that the next generation of Jeep Wrangler is going to feature some kind of diesel engine, but now we know the
facts. We have also learned that the Wrangler will get a new transmission too. The
same combination of engine and transmission that currently powers the Grand
Cherokee will soon be coming to the Wrangler.

Fiat Chrysler have been planning the new Wrangler for a
while. Pure off-road is still a huge segment, one that Jeep dominates. Like all
automotive segments, it needs constant change, development, innovation and
improvement to maintain momentum. That's where these new features come in.

Diesel power

First the engine. We now know that the new Jeep Wrangler
will have a 3.0-litre V6 EcoDiesel engine. The engine is capable of delivering
240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to Autoblog,
we now have kind of confirmation that the engine we thought would power the new
Wrangler actually is going to power it.

While some have a love/hate relationship with diesel
engines, the low down power and torque numbers are nothing to be sniffed at. Especially
when hauling cargo or going off road. The transition has been slow and
hesitant, but vehicles like the Ram 1500 and that Jeep Grand Cherokee are
proving that there is an appetite for smooth diesel power in North America.
Given its improved performance in the cold, we would have though uptake would
have been faster here in Canada too.

According to Ram, the Ram 1500 diesel has made up around 20
percent of sales across North America. That's twice the expect demand for
diesel power.

Alongside that 3.0-litre EcoDiesel will be a very
accomplished eight-speed transmission sourced from ZF. Again, the same one as
in the Grand Cherokee and Ram 1500 diesel and a very good transmission it is
too. We don't envy Jeep's engineers having to shoehorn it into a much smaller
chassis, so we wish them luck!

So while we have "confirmation" of this engine and
transmission combination, another rumour appears. That of a hybrid Wrangler
with a combination gasoline/electric motor. We know nothing at all about that
and aren't likely to for a while yet. In the meantime, this Jeep Wrangler is
expected to enter manufacture sometime in 2017.
