Jeep Wrangler 4xe begins production

Jeep Wrangler 4xe begins production

The hotly anticipated new Jeep, the Wrangler 4xe begins production in Toledo, Ohio. The electric variant of the world’s most famous off roader has begun hitting the production line and should be ready for dealerships in the New Year.

Jeep says this model is the most technologically advanced Wrangler ever. Given the relatively basic design of the car, that’s probably true.

Just as long as that technology doesn’t get in the way of its off road ability or interrupt the fun you can have in this vehicle we’re all for it!

No fear there. From what we have seen so far, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe should be just as much fun, if not more so, than the standard model.

2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a hybrid model with a combined output of 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It uses a 2.0-litre gas engine combined with an electric motor mounted on the transmission.

The combination offers a very efficient hybrid drivetrain with two clutches to enable switching in and out of electric-only mode.

A set of 17 kWh, liquid-cooled batteries should provide up to 25 miles of electric-only drive before the engine will need to recharge.

The design of the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe is its strength. It looks a lot like a standard Wrangler with just a small badge with 4xe marking it out. It should have exactly the same off road ability, the same cabin size and comfort and no compromises except a slight weight penalty.

The electric motor, batteries and connections are all under the car, batteries and inverter under the seat and the motor replaces the torque converter. The Wrangler also manages to pack in regenerative braking for a little extra efficiency.

Still off road

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe can come with Dana 44 axles front and rear, Selec-Trac two-speed transfer case and Trac-Loc limited-slip differential.

Buyers of the Rubicon version will also get Rock-Trac 4x4 system, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, a 77.2:1 crawl ratio and electric sway-bar disconnect.

As this is a Jeep, you can expect the full range of optional extras and aftermarket parts for the 4xe. As the car was initially delayed, some buyers will be offered $100USD towards parts as an apology for that delay.

We should be seeing the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe in Canada sometime in the new year. Register your interest at Unique Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, 915 Walkers Line, Burlington, ON L7N 3V8.
