Ford Mustang is 56 years old

The Ford Mustang turned 56 years old on April 17th. Not only is it still the world’s best-selling sports car, it is also now well over half a century old. Having been launched on April 17th 1964, the fast Ford has wowed owners and fans the world over.

Despite over 70% of Mustangs being sold in the US, the car is also popular here in Canada and even in Europe where gas is a lot more expensive. That’s a testament to the unerring vision of retaining a practical, beautiful car with performance under the hood for when you want to have some fun.

According to Ford, they have sold 633,000 of the current generation Mustang. Again, the majority of them in the US, but countries such as Germany are seeing increases in sales despite having their own homegrown performance marques. That’s just how good this car is!

2020 Ford Mustang

The 2020 Ford Mustang is the sixth generation of the pony car and arguably the prettiest yet. It is a superb design that balances everyday appeal with a sport car heritage. It looks modern, yet mean, approachable, yet determined and is definitely one of the few modern designs that effectively bridge those gaps.

The signature front end is the most successful. The big front grille with the pony front and centre, angled lighting, curved hood and fenders and panel detailing throughout adds a lot of interest to an already interesting design.

Inside, the cabin is spacious up front and can comfortably seat four. The front seats are supportive and in leather, are very comfortable. Step up to the Recaro seats and the driving experience is transformed!

With a good mix of soft touch materials, carbon fibre trim (depending on the model), touchscreen and more it’s a nice place to be, especially if you’re behind the wheel.

Engine and mechanicals

The 2020 Ford Mustang offers a range of engines, from a pair of 2.3-litre turbocharged engines, an engine from the Ford Focus RS and the V8s. Each performs well and delivers a throaty soundtrack. Some engines will work best for some drivers while others wouldn’t dream of anything less than the V8.

Whatever engine you go for, you will get a responsive motor with enough get up and go for any type of driving. The car is as at home on city streets as it is twisty blacktop or the highway. It is one of the many reasons the Mustang has endured for so long.

Not only is the Mustang a great drive, it’s safe too. Rated five stars by the US NHTSA and the IIHS rated the 2019 model as Good. It hasn’t tested the 2020 model yet.

Safety tech can include adaptive cruise control, rear camera, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, active lane control, driver attention alerts and blind-spot monitors.

The 2020 Ford Mustang is a solid investment no matter what type of driving you do. No wonder it’s still going strong after half a century in service!
