A Proper Look at the F-150 Lightning Before Release

Now the hype from the launch has died down, we can take a proper look at the F-150 Lightning.  The debut was a big deal, with Ford partly celebrating the launch and partly celebrating being one of the first to launch an electric truck.

 

The F-150 Lightning is being built at the new Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan. It’s where Henry Ford first developed the production line and made the brand one of the most automakers in the world.

 

Something Bill Ford was only too happy to point out.

 

“Today we celebrate the Model T moment for the 21st Century at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center,” said Ford Executive Chairman Bill Ford.

 

“The Rouge is where Ford perfected the moving assembly line, making it a fitting backdrop as we make history again. The stunning anticipation for F-150 Lightning is a credit to the work of our Ford engineers and designers, and the UAW team members who are building these trucks with pride.”

What about the truck itself? Does it deliver? From what we have seen so far, it does. Bad news for Ram and for the Cybertruck!

 

The main thing to know about the F-150 is that it isn’t an EV for early adopters. It has been designed specifically to be in the mainstream.

 

To be used every day. To work. To take the kids to school, move RVs and jet skis and do all those things the standard F-150 does.

 

Just with zero emissions and no stopping for gas.

 

The Ford F-150 Lightning will be able to use two electric motors with two range options. Standard range should deliver around 426 hp and up to 230 miles of range and the Extended range 563 hp and up to 320 miles of range.

 

Both can use a range of chargers to refill depending on what’s available.

The design of the Ford F-150 Lightning is largely the same as the standard truck, with some minor differences.

 

The main one is the light bar at the front. It’s a three piece bar that goes around the headlights and across the front grille to make the struck stand out.

 

Otherwise, minor trim differences, a new grille, front charging flap and some minor touches are all that’s different.

 

It’s the same for the interior too. The same high level of finishing is everywhere. The dashboard and centre stack are largely the same, with differences in the instrument cluster and some functions to manage the EV part.

 

Towing and hauling should still be the same, with a targeted 4535 kg tow and 907 kg haul weight.

 

The 15” touchscreen dominates but looks cool. It seems clear, detailed and will use Ford’s Sync 4A to drive it.

 

Ford Co-Pilot360 will also feature.

 

The Ford F-150 Lightning looks to be a genuine contender for an everyday electric truck. We can’t wait to get one in the dealership!
