The Demand for Electric Trucks in Canada is Growing

The Demand for Electric Trucks in Canada is Growing

Of all the sectors we thought would prove problematic for the EV transition,  electric trucks in Canada seem to have taken off faster than anyone could have imagined.

Many auto industry observers, myself included, imagined trucks would hold onto the gas engine until the very last second. Only giving up once the last gas pump in Canada had run dry.

That’s not the case.

Demand for electric trucks is surging and shows no sign of slowing down.

Ford F-150 Lightning

The Ford F-150 Lightning is a case in point. It has gathered over 200,000 pre-orders since the books opened and they are still coming in.

Even though price parity is sill a major concern for EV buyers, people are snapping them up faster than they can be manufactured.

Ford is so concerned about keeping up that they have announced a further $20 USD investment in EVs.

That investment overt the next 5-10 years will help pay for retooling and converting existing plants over to EV manufacture.

That’s a huge project but one that needs to happen. While electricity isn’t going to be the only alternative fuel, it is definitely going to be the most popular alternative.

Invest now in EVs and that will help keep Ford on the map in terms of availability and viability for future models.

EV car sales also surprising

According to InsideEVs, sales of electric vehicle are still climbing. Data from December 2021 showed over 907,000 EV sales across the world.

This brings EVs a 15% market share in sales, which is a big jump on November 2021 when it was 11.5%.

That’s an increase of almost a third!

That’s a new record but we doubt it will stand for long. With more models, better range and much more choice in terms of drivetrains and options, these sales are just going to climb.

Hybrids also saw an increase, with more people considering a hybrid vehicle the ideal middle ground for switching.

Hybrid sales were around 650,000 in December, which is a 9% increase on the same month 2020.

Considering the global economy and the pandemic, that’s truly impressive!

The drive to electric

The drive to electric trucks in Canada has only just begun. With more automakers releasing more electric models, the landscape is going to swing much more in favour of EVs.

Even if the US isn’t going to mandate an end to gas engines, the rest of the world is heading that way, so we will all be driving EVs, even if Americans won’t.

Ford has realized the power of green motoring and is investing huge sums, so we expect its main home market will adopt EVs soon enough.

With Ram planning an electric truck, Rivian and the Cybertruck all on the horizon, it’s a good time to be looking for a new truck. As long as you’re not in a hurry anyway!

Of all the electric trucks around right now, the Ford F-150 Lightning has to be top pick. Learn more about it at Northway Ford Lincoln, 388 King George Road Brantford ON N3S 3N2.
