Dodge Grand Caravan ends production

One of the most familiar minivans on our roads is ending production in May this year. The Dodge Grand Caravan has been a stalwart people carrier but its time is up and will no longer be manufactured in the Windsor, Ontario plans where it has been manufactured for the longest time.

The Dodge Grand Caravan’s future was finite, especially after the Chrysler Pacifica was launched but I didn’t quite expect it to end quite so soon. The arrival of the Chrysler Voyager was the final straw I think and now the Grand Caravan is an endangered species.

Dodge Grand Caravan

The Dodge Grand Caravan is one of the longest serving minivans on the market. The platform is one of the oldest around, but with steady refreshes, has managed to remain in competition to maintain decent sales throughout that time.

The design harks back to the Dodge of old. Simple but very effective designs with the Dodge grille front and centre, straightforward profiles with very little panel detailing, balanced chassis with small overhangs at either end, lots of glass to keep the interior light and bright and a very accessible rear door to help load cargo.

The Dodge Grand Caravan was known for its practicality. Large, light interiors, lots of storage, the ability to carry lots of cargo with the seats folded down and the neat trick of those seats folding into cavities in the floor for a truly flat loading area, Stow n’ Go. Stow n’ Go is so successful that it was designed into the Chrysler Pacifica but you saw it here first.

Under the hood

Under the hood of the Grand Caravan is the ever-reliable 3.6-litre V6 engine that produces 283 hp. It uses a six speed automatic transmission to send drive to the front wheels. While there has been a shift towards more gears within a box, the six in the Grand Caravan cope well with urban and highway driving and won’t waste too much of your time hunting for the next cog.

Despite being an older model, the Grand Caravan still packed in the tech. Models can come with a 6.5” screen, 17-inch wheels, three-zone climate control, Bluetooth, automatic headlights, leather upholstery, satellite navigation, heated front seats and a whole lot more.

The Grand Caravan doesn’t pack all the latest tech such as heads-up display or Apple Car Play but for its age, it puts in a great showing.

If you’re a fan of the Dodge Grand Caravan, there is still time to put your order in. The books will be closing for good on this reliable people mover but we can still acquire new and some certified used minivans in a range of specifications.
