Will the Kia Optima be renamed the Kia K5?

Will the Kia Optima be renamed the Kia K5?

Rumours abound at the moment about the Kia Optima being renamed the K5 in North America. The K5 is what the Optima is called in Korea and there are hints doing the rounds that the same name could be used here too.

We don’t quite know where this rumour originated but it has been mentioned across social media and on other automotive blogs. While Kia has released a ‘no comment’ comment, it hasn’t stopped rumours flying around that the name could be changing, perhaps in time for the new 2021 Kia Optima/K5.

To be honest, I don’t think it matters too much whether the new car is called the Optima or K5. It’s the design that makes it stand out. With a new, modernized front end and a racier rear, the 2021 model is going to be popular for its looks, not its name.

2020 Kia Optima

The current 2020 Kia Optima is no slouch either. It’s an exceptional design, offers an excellent cabin, good driving manners and a lot of value for your money.

The 2020 Kia Optima is one sedan that won’t be changed into a crossover anytime soon. It’s a solid design with tiger nose up front, angled lighting, hood detailing, a nice set of alloys and a very sleek profile. The look flows from the low front end over a raked windshield, over a rounded roof down to a subtle rear. Very pleasing to the eye.

Inside, passenger space is generous both in front and in back. Lots of glass offers a feeling of space that is backed up with lots of head and legroom. The driving position is very supportive with an unfussy dashboard, clear instruments and a straightforward centre console that features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The Optima uses a selection of normally aspirated and turbocharged engines together with six or seven speed automatic transmissions. There are also two hybrids that are proving very popular. One hybrid is a conventional setup while the other is a plug-in hybrid. Both offer similar performance with more miles to the gallon.

The 2020 Kia Optima was awarded Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and is rated excellent by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The car includes forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go. All combine to create a very safe car to drive and be driven in.

With lots of passenger space, decent cargo space, frugal but fun engines and a great drive, the 2020 Kia Optima should be on your list when shopping for a new car. Visit Grimsby Kia, 435 South Service Road Grimsby, ON L3M 4E8 to see it up close.
