Following the news that France was banning gas and diesel engines a week or so ago, it seems other European countries are joining or thinking of joining in. Last week the UK joined France in an announcement that it too would ban the sale of gas and diesel cars by 2040.
There is a caveat to that ban though. It will not include hybrid engines with a gasoline component. There is a plan in place to remove all internal combustion engines from the road by 2050 but that has yet to be turned into policy.
The pressure to reduce pollution and improve air quality is behind the move for both the UK and France. The air in cities is dirty and plans to clean it up have so far failed. The UK in particular has been censured by the EU for failing to meet air quality standards. Reducing fossil-fuelled vehicles is a sure way to improve air quality.
The announcement was met with a lot of negative comment citing the impracticality of the move, the fact automakers have only 23 years to deliver alternative fuels and that there is nothing wrong with gasoline. However, the UK government left hybrid engines alone for just this reason.
There are already quite a number of viable hybrid vehicles already on the market and more to come. Ford has already committed to a number of EVs, hybrids and other fuels and should be well placed to deliver the vehicles required.
The same for Nissan, Toyota and Honda, all who have a significant European presence. BMW, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz and even Porsche are all working on hybrid and EV vehicles and have at least one model available right now.
Current hybrid and EV options
Ford already has five hybrid and electric models, the C-Max Hybrid, C-Max Energi, Fusion Hybrid, Fusion Energi and Focus Electric. Kia has the Niro and Soul EV, Hyundai the Ioniq, Nissan has the Leaf and Chrysler has the Pacifica.
There are many more models planned for release over the next decade. All automakers are no doubt already planning more models to be released before 2040.
While the end is definitely nigh for the internal combustion engine, it isn’t dead yet. No North American government is planning such as ban as far as we know. With gasoline engines becoming more and more efficient, there may actually be no need to ban them at all. Much depends on what technologies are on the horizon.
