Two new Kia Optima hybrids on the way

Two new Kia Optima hybrids on the way

As well as the 2017 Kia Niro hybrid, Kia also announced two new Kia Optima hybrids at the Chicago Auto Show last week. One is a standard hybrid while the other is a plug-in hybrid. Both are likely to be a big hit.
While gas prices might be low right now, there is no telling where they will be this time next year. There is also the thorny subject of pollution. If you’re prefer to take a longer view of your motoring future, driving a fuel efficient vehicle makes perfect sense. Thanks to Kia, you now have two extra choices.
Kia Optima hybrid
The new Kia Optima hybrid looks a lot like a standard Optima sedan but with a few styling tweaks to improve aerodynamics and make it stand out. A slightly modified front end with a new front grille, rear bumper, bumper and diffuser. Special aero alloy wheels also feature.
The car will be powered by Kia’s 2.0-litre four cylinder mated to a 38kW electric motor. Combined output is expected to be around 193 hp. The electric motor will use a high-density 1.62 kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. This pack is smaller than previous models, meaning it doesn’t take up quite so much trunk space.
Kia Optima plug-in hybrid
The new Kia Optima plug-in hybrid uses the same styling as the standard hybrid and looks almost identical. The new Optima is a great looking car, so further tweaking is unnecessary.
The car uses the same gas engine as the hybrid but a more powerful electric motor. It’s a 50kW unit with a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack to provide the juice. Output is closer to the 200 hp mark. A High Voltage Electric Oil Pump and a water cooled transmission will also feature, which Kia claims makes the engine 20% more efficient.
Electric-only range is 27 miles, combine range with a full tank is in excess of 600 miles. Charging is accomplished in 3 hours using a 240V outlet, or 9 hours at 120V.
Both Kia Optima hybrids will enter production sometime in the summer and hit dealerships in Q4 2016. Pricing and availability have yet to be announced.
The new Optima looks fantastic. It was already a good looking car and how that has been sent to new heights. With the current model now a regular sight on Canadian streets, we think this new design is going to be even more popular!
