Third generation Ford Focus RS unveiled

 

A couple of days ago, Ford unveiled their new Ford Focus RS.
Usually when they showcase a fast Focus, we like what we see but don't get too
excited as it never makes its way to North America. This time it's different.
This time we're getting it too!

This is the third generation Ford Focus RS and it really is
a sight for sore eyes. It's bulky, with lots of body kit, planted thanks to a
slightly wider floorpan, flared wheel arches and a low stance. The front is
very futuristic, with a low air dam, huge grille and edges everywhere. It's
definitely a masculine car, but it's also definitely a car for the modern
performance buyer.

The RS moniker has always been what Ford uses to denote
their performance cars. The previous version of the Focus RS used a Volvo
engine, five cylinders, big power and front wheel drive. With power and FWD
come torque steer, even a clever limited-slip differential couldn't prevent it
completely.

Fortunately, this time round, the new Ford Focus RS has an
AWD system which will send the majority of the power, 70 percent or so, to the
rear wheels. The RS will also have Performance All-Wheel Drive with Dynamic
Torque Vectoring Control to help maintain constant power and grip.

Under the hood is a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four cylinder that
delivers over 315 hp. It is apparently based on the Mustang's new EcoBoost
engine and features neat tweaks such as a more efficient intercooler, direct
fuel injection, twin independent cam shafts, a new turbo, new lighter and stronger
cylinder heads and other upgrades to deliver such performance out of what it a
relatively small engine.

The Ford Focus RS  will also have a six speed manual transmission
as the only option. The transmission has been made stronger to cope with the
power and includes short throws for faster changes. Other performance upgrades
for the car include sports suspension, anti-roll bars, configurable dampers, electric
power steering and high performance Michelin 235/35 R19 tires.

Ford's press release had this to say:

high-performance technology and innovative engineering that sets a new
benchmark for driving exhilaration on the road and track," said Raj Nair, group
vice president, Global Product Development, Ford Motor Company.

"The RS line has a proud history of technical breakthroughs
that have migrated to mainstream Ford vehicles to benefit all of our customers,
and the new Focus RS is no exception. It's a great example of our passion for
innovation through performance, and creating vehicles that make people’s hearts
pound."

Production begins in Germany later this year with deliveries
to Canada a short time after. As soon as we know a definitive date, we'll let
you know!
