The Kia Telluride SUV

The Kia Telluride SUV

We mentioned on Monday that Kia were planning to unveil a new SUV concept but little did we know it would look so good. Eager to get in on the SUV action that is so alive and well, the Korean automaker is having another go at creating a consumer-friendly SUV to compete in a very competitive market. But is it enough?
Despite only being able to see it at the show, we think it might just be.

Kia Telluride
Named after a Colorado ski resort, the Kia Telluride is a vehicle you can’t help but look at. It’s a masculine, modern design that combines influences from around the world and creates something truly new.

At first glance, the front of the Kia Telluride has a lot of Bentley about it. Indeed, if you removed the Kia badge and put the flying spur in its place, you would be forgiven for thinking that’s exactly what it was. From the front anyway. While the tiger nose is present and correct, the extra height at the front makes it a little less signature.

Smooth sides, rounded body panels, a high ride height, large alloy wheels and a distinct waistline all add to the appeal of this SUV. There is a lot of glass which should offer lots of light and visibility to the cabin. At the back a unique smooth tailgate and vertical LED light cluster mark the Kia Telluride as something completely different. A rooftip spoiler and chrome tailpipes and surrounding trim just add to that.

What isn’t immediately obvious is the set of rear suicide doors that negates the need for a B-pillar. We doubt that aspect will make it to production but you never know.

Inside the Kia Telluride
The cabin of the Kia Telluride is suitably modern for a concept. It has a unique two-spoke steering wheel, large digital displays, an even larger infotainment screen and a range of dials and switches. Each door has its own small screen connected to sensors that show your vital signs. These vitals are then read by the internal lighting system which will display suitable colours depending on your state. Another aspect we think won’t make it to production!

The Kia Telluride sits on a Sorento platform and is slightly longer and wider than its donor. Under the hood is a hybrid-electric drivetrain that has a 3.5-litre V6 gasoline engine connected to an electric motor. Combined output is in the region of 400 hp which is sent to all wheels. More drivetrain details have yet to be announced.

We quite like the Kia Telluride and look forward to seeing a version of it hit dealerships at some point in the future. Kia have yet to give us a date but we’ll let you know when they do.
