The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee may become a thing of the past

The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee may become a thing of the past

The Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have been mainstays of the Stellantis (formerly FCA) lineup since forever. That may be changing as the company has been negotiating with the Cherokee Nation in the US over the use of the name.

The Cherokee has been around since 1974 while the Grand Cherokee has been with us since 2013. If there have been issues with the name, they haven’t been widely reported enough for this writer to have seen them but given how things are today, it doesn’t surprise us.

Apparently, the new CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares has been discussing the issue with representatives of the Cherokee Nation. The talks are apparently around whether the use of the name is appropriate.

He is currently of the opinion that there is nothing disparaging about using the name for a vehicle but is said to be dealing directly with the Cherokee Nation to understand their feelings on the subject.

So, while no decision has been made and Tavares doesn’t see an issue, it seems he isn’t against renaming the SUVs if required.

2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of the most luxurious mainstream SUVs you can buy from a domestic manufacturer. It’s big, well designed, well appointed and has been very well received.

This year sees two Grand Cherokee. The standard model and the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L, a three row model.

Despite the design being ancient in motoring terms, it has aged very well. Updates have kept it current while a cohesive design from the outset ensured a timeless classic.

The SUV is big but not overbearing. The characteristic grille is still there, as are the lights, lower sill and side vents. It rides high on big wheels and has a squarer shape than many competitors.

This shape benefits you once you’re inside. Head and legroom are generous, there is plenty of cargo space and the Grand Cherokee is a very nice place to spend time.

Engine and mechanicals

Under the hood of the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee is one of three engines. The ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 that delivers 295 hp, the 5.7-litre V8 with 360 hp and the 6.2-litre supercharged V8 with 475 hp. All use an automatic transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels.

Then there’s the Hellcat. A supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine that makes 707 hp. It’s not the engine everyone would choose but if you love the sound, you would happily pay for this model. I know I would!

With 4 different drive systems, 7 trims and now two types, choice is not something you’re short of with the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Neither is luxury!
