The importance of research when buying a car online

Researching a new car is exciting and most important part of buying a new car. It is also the easiest and the most difficult aspect of buying a car. That’s even more true if you’re planning to buy your car online.

Research is easy because of the sheer number of resources at your disposal. You have review websites, manufacturer websites, dealer sites, car apps and the hundreds of enthusiast websites discussing every element of new makes and models.

Researching a new car is also the most difficult because many of us don’t buy a car for one reason. We don’t buy the car purely because it’s the fastest in a quarter mile or because we want a specific piece of technology. Well most of us don’t anyway.

Car choice is much more nuanced than that.

Wants and needs

If you’re planning to buy a car online, you have the time and space to research as much as you like before you buy. There will be no sales person hovering over you or implying there is a time limit on an offer. It’s your process to manage your way.

If you’re struggling to select a particular car, it might be worth making a list of wants and needs. We start the list the other way round.

Make a list of what the car needs to have. Stick to things it must have such as AWD for Canadian winters, navigation, the latest safety tech or whatever your car must have if it is to serve its core purpose.

Then make a list of what you want your car to feature. A specific colour, leather interior, black aluminium wheels or whatever you want it to have.

Pricing up

Now you have the list of requirements, load a car configurator to see if the makes and models you’re considering can deliver your needs within budget. If it can, add some of those wants in there too and keep going until you hit budget or complete your list.

If you’re considering buying a used car online, search our listings of certified used cars to see what we have in stock. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, call or email us as we may be able to get it for you.

Read reviews

If reviews didn’t feature in your initial research, now is a good time to use them. Take the specific make, model and trim you priced up and search for reviews. Don’t go to Facebook or other social media site, go to a legitimate review site or car website.

Read as many user reviews and professional reviews as you can to get a feel for how your chosen car performs and anything to look out for. Don’t let a single review put you onto the car or off of the car. Use all of the reviews to build a consensus.
