A Ford F-150 Truck is Fastest American Police Car

There are many reasons to buy a Ford F-150 truck and we imagine the fact it’s a fast police car isn’t one of them. Yet it’s an interesting feather in the truck’s cap.

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) testing team, the fastest police car on the market is the 2021 Ford F-150 Police Responder pickup truck.

These findings will apparently be backed up by the Michigan State Police testing team who similarly found the F-150 to be faster than other vehicles they tested.

LA found the F-150 hit 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds, and a quarter-mile in 14.44 seconds at 98.19 mph.

The 2021 Ford F-150 Police Responder begins life as a 2021 Ford F-150 FX4 with SuperCrew cab. It is then equipped with a twin turbocharged 3.6-litre V6 engine that delivers 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. It uses Ford’s 10 speed automatic transmission to drive all four wheels.

It also comes with a torque-on-demand transfer case to help deliver that power to all four wheels.

For us mere mortals who cannot drive around at speed with blue flashing lights, the standard 2021 Ford F-150 is still an exceptional truck.

It’s good looking, capable and unflappable. As comfortable on urban streets as it is off road. As content hauling lumber as it is with a jet ski in back.

The truck is great to look at with a mature design and a confidence borne of delivering solid performance for years now.

The exterior has a lot of panel detailing considering it’s a truck but it looks good. The front end is tall with a huge grille and those vertical lights each side. A high ride height and plenty of glass means visibility is good all round.

Inside, cabins can be kept barebones or turned into a luxury living room with lashings of leather and technology.

Under the hood

The 2021 Ford F-150 comes with either a 3.5-litre turbocharged V6, 3.3-litre V6, 2.7-litre turbocharged V6, 5.0-litre V8 and a 3.0-litre turbodiesel. The electric variant is also on its way.

There is also a hybrid model for those who prefer to have a gas engine as backup and an electric motor to drive accessories.

All use Ford’s 10 speed automatic transmission to drive the rear or all wheels.

The hybrid uses an electric motor with 1.5-kwh lithium-ion battery paired with the transmission. It can drive the truck in electric-only mode but is probably more useful when paired with a generator to drive accessories.

While most of us will never drive a 2021 Ford F-150 Police Responder, the standard truck is plenty enough for most uses.
