The Best Minivan To Buy Isn't Even a Minivan

640 × 480
Apparently the best minivan to buy is a Dodge Durango. That’s according to The Drew Johnson Experience anyway. In a pretty good video on YouTube, the Durango is put through its paces as a family hauler.

While the video does badmouth the excellent Chrysler Pacifica, the video is interesting and well worth a watch. That is especially true as I happen to agree with many of the points made in the video. The Durango does look better than the Honda Odyssey. It is more sleek and has more kerb appeal and it does have a V8 version. All good reasons to try one.

Here’s the video:

2018 Dodge Durango

The Dodge Durango design has indeed been with us a while, but it works. It’s a handsome SUV that still looks good so long after initial release. This is a three row SUV that doesn’t look bulky or oversized and offers a decent range of engines and options for a fair price.

The design is muscular sure, but not overly so. A big front end has some complicated panel shapes and some large grille areas but looks great with those lights. The hood is better with the scoop but looks good without it too. A long, fairly flat roof and steady beltline offers a stable looking profile.

Inside, the materials and finishing is excellent. There is decent heat and leg room in all rows, although the third is mainly for kids. There is a little cargo space in a fully loaded Durango too which is nice.

Based on the underpinnings of a Grand Cherokee, the Durango drives well. The 3.6-litre V6 engine is good for 293 hp and that is enough. There is also a 5.7-litre V8 that delivers 360 hp and a 6.4-litre V8 in the SRT that’s good for 475 hp. All use a competent eight speed automatic transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels.

Like most SUVs, the 2018 Dodge Durango can be had in basic guise and then be expanded up the trim levels with a ton of options. The base models is well specced with the SXT offering alloy wheels, infotainment, USB chargers and the usual features. You can increase the comfort levels with leather, moonroof, Alpine audio, upgraded suspension and brakes and all sorts of goodies.
