The 2018 Dodge Demon and the Popular Science Award

640 × 346
The two shouldn’t really go together, but they do. The 2018 Dodge Demon with the V8-powered Dodge with 840 hp on tap and Popular Science, a website dedicated to all things science. So what do the two have in common? The fact that Popular Science has awarded the 2018 Dodge Demon with a 2017 Popular Science Award.

Why? The charged air cooler called the SRT Power Chiller. This innovative part of the engine setup is one that I missed completely but now I know about it, the system seems very cool indeed. Pun intended.

The 2018 Dodge Demon was one of a number of automotive products to win an award. Others included car tires that crush ice, the 2018 Ford GT and a head’s up display for motorcycle helmets. All of the products offer huge potential but none seem as cool as the Power Chiller.

The SRT Power Chiller
The SRT Power Chiller has taken the logical leap in the requirement for cool air to reduce the temperature of the supercharger and the availability of cool air in the air conditioning. The neat system uses refrigerant from the AC system and circulates around the supercharger to lower the temperature.

A supercharger uses its own coolant to circulate around the intercooler to keep temperatures low. The SRT Power Chiller adds another coolant to keep that supercharger coolant cool. Following me so far?

The SRT Power Chiller bolts on to the intercooler as an extra process. It uses refrigerant from the AC to cool the supercharger coolant to a much lower temperature than is usually possible. This in turn lowers the temperature of the supercharger intercooler and thus the air travelling through the system. The cooler the air, the bigger the bang.

During normal driving, there is no need for the SRT Power Chiller so it is deactivated. Hit the loud pedal or engage Drag Mode and the system is engaged so the engine can deliver every one of those 840 horses.

The air entering the supercharger is cooler and therefore denser. This results in more powerful combustion and better performance. It is a technical solution to a very simple idea but works very well by all accounts. Certainly well enough to win a Popular Science Award!
