Ram Tops the 2021 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

Ram Tops the 2021 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study is a U.S. study that covers the first 90 days of ownership and takes responses from new car owners spread over every automaker, covering 223 specific areas of new cars.

It’s a comprehensive study that is respected across the world and Ram came out on top.

J.D. Power Initial Quality Study

The J.D. Power Initial Quality Study looks at 9 specific categories and 223 specific areas of new cars. That includes infotainment, problems, mechanicals and all those things that can impact a new car experience.

Over 110,000 people responded to the study and answered the questions based on those 9 categories. Those categories are infotainment features, controls and displays, exterior, driving assistance, interior, powertrain, seats, driving experience and climate.

The results are then expressed as ‘problems experienced per 100 vehicles’ or PP100. The lower the number, the higher the automaker is placed.

Ram had a score of 128, Dodge 139, Kia 147, Jeep 149 and Ford 162. All at the top of the table.

Kia did particularly well with the Kia Forte, Kia Sedona, Kia Soul, Kia Sportage and Kia Telluride all scoring at the top of their segments.

The Ram 2500/3500 and Jeep Gladiator both won their respective segments.

2021 Ram 2500

The 2021 Ram 2500 is a big truck. It can haul up to 17 tons and can go anywhere, at any time. It’s a truck designed for work and is unashamed about being big and bold.

The design is very similar to the Ram 1500, only bigger. It has a huge front end, massive hood, high ride height and lovely cabin. The design is simple and unfussy but can still look cool.

The cabin is large and can be configured to be wipe clean basic or leather lined luxurious. It’s comfortable, configurable and has enough room for a work crew or all the family.

The 2500 comes in either regular, crew cab or Mega Cab and can come with two different load bed sizes.

There are several trims levels, Tradesman, Big Horn, Power Wagon, Laramie, Laramie Longhorn and Limited.

There are literally hundreds of options within the configurator covering every technology you can think of. Then add the special editions and you have a dizzying array of options depending on what you need and how much you have to spend.

Under that huge hood is either a 6.4-litre gasoline V8 that produces 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque or a 6.7-litre turbodiesel inline 6 that produces 370 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque or 400 hp and 1,000 lb-ft of torque.

Both use either a 6 or 8 speed automatic transmission to drive the rear wheels.

The truck can come with automatic emergency braking and active lane control, and a surround-view camera but they cost extra.

We’re not surprised Ram topped the charts. The automatic is a solid performer and delivers reliable trucks with comfortable interiors and very capable engines.
