Nissan Navara Truck: A Quick Overview

Nissan Navara Truck: A Quick Overview

600 × 375

The truck market is hotting up nicely. The F-150 still dominates, the Ranger is almost here, the Ram 1500 is still a close second and now Nissan is revealing a new, tougher Navara truck to take on the current kings of the crop. We know the Navara as the Frontier and it looks like the new version has the upcoming Ford Ranger Raptor firmly in its sights.

The new Navara AT32 was revealed at the annual 2018 Birmingham Commercial Vehicle Show over in England. The AT32 presumably for All-Terrain as well as Arctic Trucks who worked with Nissan to develop this new offering. From first glance, off roading is definitely something it will be able to do with ease.

The Navara AT32 differs from the current model in all the right ways for an off roader. It has a higher ride height, higher riding front and rear angles to help ascending and descending, it has a new locking differential, skid plates underneath to protect the oil sump, transmission, driveshaft and fuel tank, a snorkel air intake and off road tires.

The engine is a 2.3-litre four cylinder turbodiesel engine that produces 188 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. The diesel is ideal for low down power and high torque and lends itself well to off roading. Diesel is also much more popular in Europe.

We don’t yet know if or when we would see the Navara AT32 up here in Canada. Given how well the truck segment is doing, I do think it’s a case of when and not if.

2018 Nissan Frontier

The 2018 Nissan Frontier is solid, reliable and helps get the job done. It isn’t seen in the kind of numbers as Ford or Ram but it’s out there and it is making a good show of itself. Reliable engines, quality interiors and sleek design make the Nissan truck a good buy for anyone who doesn’t want to stick to what they know.

The design is simple and rugged. Rounded edges keep things civil while the Nissan V grille reminds you who you’re dealing with. Single or crew cab options keeps things flexible while still being able to tow and haul decent loads.

There are two engines available, a 2.5-litre four cylinder that produces 152 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque and a 4.0-litre V6 that produces 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. Both use a manual or automatic transmission to send power to the rear or all wheels.

The 2018 Nissan Frontier is available in S, SV, SV V6, Pro-4X and Desert Runner trims. We are hoping that an AT32 version is coming soon.
