Nissan announced camera-based mirror for new Armada

640 × 480
The new 2018 Nissan Armada has just been released and we got a look at a new feature that comes with this full size Nissan SUV. The new rearview mirror which isn’t a mirror but a camera.

The 2018 Nissan Armada is likely the first of many Nissans to get the new mirror setup. The optional I-RVM or Intelligent Rear View Mirror will be made available at launch and uses a high definition camera to capture the rear view. This isn’t just a gimmicky reversing camera screen though, it is much more than that.

I-RVM uses a neat LCD screen that sits behind the rearview mirror. A rear-facing camera captures the view from out back and plays it on the screen. The camera has a wide field of view and enhanced low light ability to offer an unparalleled view of what is happening behind. Playback can also be turned off if you prefer using the standard mirror.

The idea seems excellent. Your passengers will no longer impede your rear view and you can stack as much cargo as you like in back and still see safely behind you. For those times when you don’t want a video view, flip a switch and you see a normal mirror again.

The only downside is that the I-RVM system will only initially be available as an option on the 2018 Nissan Armada Platinum.

2018 Nissan Armada
The 2018 Nissan Armada was released on September 1 and seems to be an incremental improvement rather than a revolutionary one. After the redesign of last year this isn’t a surprise. Considering how effective that redesign was, I think it’s a good thing that this year’s model builds on that success.

The Armada is a full size SUV. It utilizes a 5.6-litre V8 engine that produces 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque. It sends power to the rear or all wheels using a 7 speed automatic transmission. This configuration allows a maximum towing weight of 8,500 pounds.

Available in SV, SL and Platinum trim, all Armada models are generously specified with alloy wheels, power accessories, LED lighting, NissanConnect with Navigation and touchscreen and a selection of other features. The Platinum version is the only one with the option for the I-RVM system but we expect that to change over time.

With handsome styling, top quality interior, legendary Nissan reliability and a very capable engine, there is a lot to recommend the 2018 Nissan Armada. Buy it in AWD guise and it will be able to cope with everything Canadian winters could throw at you.
