Or bring big changes to the existing lineup. Nissan bought a controlling stake in the beleaguered Mitsubishi late 2016 after the latter automaker needed a hand to survive after some issue it had back in Japan. Now the two companies are in the first steps of deciding which models from each company go forward.

There are a couple of places where both companies cross over, one of which is the full size SUV. While Mitsubishi cars are largely forgettable except for the Lancer Evolution which is now consigned to the history books.

The Nissan have the Armada and the Mitsubishi have the Pajero. Both of which are now old models sorely in need of modernization. The Armada is a solid workhorse of an SUV but needs to be brought up to meet current expectations. Mitsubishi have a solid reputation in engines and hybrid drivetrains thanks to its market presence in other regions of the world.

The plan is for the two companies to combine their expertise to either revolutionize the Armada or do something completely new. With the ink only just dry on the new deal, plans for a new or revitalized SUV and other models in their stable are still in the early planning stages. It will be a year or so yet before we know much more.

2017 Nissan Armada
The 2017 Nissan Armada is an old school body on frame SUV that is still going strong seven years after the launch of this generation. It is a full size SUV with a rugged appearance, rock solid off road ability and decent towing capacity.

The Armada is a world model, sold as the Nissan Patrol in other markets and can often be seen in the harshest environments. The 5.6-litre V8 engine delivers 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque through a seven speed automatic transmission. Two or four wheel drive is available.

Considering its size, the interior of the 2017 Nissan Armada is cavernous. Passenger and cargo space is plentiful and the seating comfortable. The SUV has lots of sound insulation so road and engine noise are kept to a minimum. Combined with a smooth transmission, comfortable seating and commanding position, driving in this SUV is a real pleasure.

This being Nissan, the cabin quality is excellent and there are lots of options to choose from. The 2017 Nissan Armada is offered in SV, SL and Platinum trim levels which include everything from alloy wheels to LED lighting, power liftgate, Moonroof, intelligent cruise control, distance control assist, forward emergency braking, predictive forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring and backup collision intervention.

The 2017 Nissan Armada is a fully featured, full size SUV with a lot of heart. Visit Collins Nissan, 155 Scott Street, St. Catharines, Ontario, L2N 1H3 to see it for yourself.
