New Kia Niro spotted being tested

New Kia Niro spotted being tested

The new Kia Niro has been spotted again being tested in Germany. It is still wearing plenty of camo and still isn’t showing us much, but it’s looking more and more like we could see it soon.

The design is supposedly inspired by the Kia HabiNiro concept car we saw last year. While the shape looks a little different, the extra camouflage at the rear hints at a similar design on that rear C pillar.

It showed as red on the concept but we doubt it will be the same for production. Either way, there’s something going on at the back that we’re not supposed to see.

The rest of the design looks familiar. An upright SUV/crossover shape with decent ground clearance, nice proportions, plenty of windshield and glass all around and some nice wheels.

This variant also had the charging port on the right left fender so we know this was the electric or hybrid.

We don’t know when the new Niro, presumably the 2023 Kia Niro, will arrive but it can’t be long now!

2021 Kia Niro

The 2021 Kia Niro is a modest crossover SUV that punches way above its weight. It’s small, easy to drive and yet can easily fit a family of four along with their stuff.

The design is ‘old’ Kia but still looks good. Rounded edges, simple lines, a curved hood, bulging lights, rolling roof and perfect proportions. The ideal family mover.

Inside, the Niro is more spacious than you would expect with good legroom front and rear, supportive seats especially up front and cargo space in back.

The driving position is relaxed with good visibility. All the switchgear feels solid and the build quality is what we expect from the new Kia. Top class.

Under the hood

Under the hood of the 2021 Kia Niro is usually a 1.6-litre four cylinder with a 1.6kWh battery and electric motor combination. It delivers a combined output of around 139 hp and drives the front wheels using a dual clutch transmission.

There is also an electric Niro with an output of 201 hp and a range of up to 200 miles. The EV variant is proving very popular, thanks to reasonable pricing, good interior space and decent range.

For now, we expect the hybrid variant to be the most popular but as prices reach parity, we think the Niro EV is easily good enough to overtake the hybrid.

It has a nice feel, solid acceleration and nobody is going to complain about having 201 hp in a crossover!

We don’t know when to expect the new Kia Niro but it can’t be long now. That spy shot shows what looks like a production ready car and we’re getting into the season for new releases.

We’ll have to wait and see though as Kia are remaining tight-lipped about a launch.

In the meantime, check out the Kia Niro at Georgetown Kia, 199 and 314 Guelph Street, Georgetown, Ontario.
