The upcoming midsize pickup the Ford Ranger may have the option of Mustang power if rumours are to be believed. News outlets have been talking about the possible inclusion of a 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine option, the same engine that currently powers the Ford Mustang.
The 2019 Ford Ranger is due within the next couple of years but no date has been set, or released, as yet. Destined to be the smaller sibling to the Ford F-150 truck, this pickup could either work really well and take sales from GM and other automakers or backfire and take sales from the current king of the trucks, the F-150.
2019 Ford Ranger
There have been no confirmation of any rumour around the 2019 Ford Ranger so far so all we have is speculation. The current belief is that it will have three engine options. The 2.3-litre EcoBoost from the Mustang, a 2.5-litre four cylinder with normal aspiration and a 3.2-litre diesel that is used in the global Ranger and Transit line.
All of these options seem likely. They are all smaller than what the F-150 offers, all compare well with competitors and the diesel will take the fight right to GM and their Duramax four cylinder. Only time will tell though.
What else do we know about the truck?
We know that it will borrow heavily from the existing Ford Ranger available as a global model. It uses a body on frame setup and will likely be only available in SuperCab and SuperCrew guise initially. Other formats may follow though.
We also expect the full range of options that is available for the F-150 to also make their way to the Ranger. Trucks can be configured in one of a hundred ways and we think the Ranger will do the same for pickups. I expect to see some of the safety tech available in the global model here too such as lane keeping and emergency braking among others.
The cabin is also likely to reflect the F-150 in terms of customization. From the very basic and workmanlike to the luxurious with every comfort option.
I would say the likelihood is that the 2019 Ford Ranger will reflect the F-150 on most things, just on a smaller scale. Ford has to be careful to balance the need for options with maintaining the market for the bigger truck so will think very carefully about what options to include and which to not.
The 2019 Ford Ranger is a way off yet and the Ford F-150 is still very much king of the road. Check it out at Northway Ford Lincoln, 388 King George Road Brantford ON N3S 3N2.
