Man buys Nissan Rogue purely over social media

The news last week that a man in Spain bought a brand new Nissan Rogue purely using social media platforms both surprised and disappointed me. It is great that dealerships are open to embracing new ways of doing business and engaging with customers. I also think it's not to great because it takes something away from the entire experience.

Apparently the customer announced his intention on Twitter, and undertook a poll on what vehicle to buy. The respondents of the Twitter poll voted for the Rogue (X-Trail in Spain) by 43%, so the buyer, one Raul Escolano, opted for it. then reached out to dealerships and at least one responded. All communications were undertaken over social media. 

The dealership provided a Periscope overview of the Rogue and the deal was done. Keys were delivered via courier and Escolano went to the Nissan HQ in Spain to collect his vehicle. As far as anyone knows, this is the first time a complete new vehicle transaction has been undertaken purely on social media.

The human element
While being able to buy stuff online has undoubtedly made life easier for all of us, there are some things that really need that face to face communication and feedback. I think buying a car is most definitely one of them. Buying a car is about building a relationship, about negotiation, about looking the customer in the eye and doing a deal. 

It is also about the look, feel and drive of the car in question. We know that all cars drive a little differently and not all cars suit all driving styles or tastes. Different trims within a model range can drive differently, let alone a random model chosen by people you have never met. This may all be a PR stunt by Nissan Spain, but all we have learned so far indicates this is a genuine buyer buying a real car.

To each their own and all that, but I would always advocate visiting a dealership, getting a feel for the people, the prices, the quality of service and the vehicle itself.
