Lincoln launching vehicle subscription service for 2018

640 × 480
One Lincoln announcement that we noticed at the LA Auto Show was that the automaker wants to get into vehicle subscriptions next year. It wants to add the alternative ownership model to its range in early 2018.

The company said it will trial the subscription service in California first before rolling it out across North America. The subscription will include the car itself along with servicing, insurance, roadside assistance and delivery and collection for a single monthly fee.

The subscription service builds on Ford’s Canvas program for used cars which was launched earlier this year. The Lincoln program will be for new cars and will only include Lincoln models.

Car subscription services
I am actually surprised that the subscription model hasn’t been tried before. We subscribe to newspapers, magazines, phone contracts, streaming TV and music and many of us rent our homes so why not cars too? Vehicles are big ticket items that many of us save long and hard for. That could be a thing of the past with a subscription.

It differs slightly from leasing in that it also includes every other expense except gas. You can get leases that include maintenance but insurance and roadside are usually left up to you. Lease cars can be delivered and collected too but probably not with the same kind of style Lincoln is capable of.

Given that we are shifting away from ownership to leasing in many other areas of our lives, it is inevitable that vehicles will follow suit. We no longer own CDs or DVDs, we rent them through iTunes or Google Play instead. You can rent clothes, furniture, appliances and homes, so why not vehicles?

This subscription model has been designed for busy people who don’t have the time, energy or desire to manage the many requirements of car ownership. Many people I know would love to have a single payment that takes care of everything and only have to fill the tank when they need to. It is how the world is going and Lincoln are going to be at the forefront of it.

While there are currently no details of what models will be included or the approximate monthly cost we could expect, the intent is obvious. To provide the most convenient way of car use possible.
