The Lincoln Corsair may be going electric

The Lincoln Corsair may be going electric

The Lincoln Corsair may be switching from gas to electric over the coming years. A new rumour says Ford is planning to extend its electrification program to Lincoln within the next five years.

That means an electric Corsair by 2026 at the latest.

The rumours say it will be called the Corsair-E and will begin production in 2026 in Ontario. It will use an all-new platform designed specifically for a series of EVs from both Ford and Lincoln and will be part of a five vehicle lineup.

After the failure of that Rivian platform, Ford is currently working on its own alternative chassis for new generation EVs. This could be it.

We have a while yet until we get to see the Corsair-E or even to have the rumour confirmed. In the meantime, the standard version is still going strong.

2021 Lincoln Corsair

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair is an excellent crossover SUV with the right combination of luxury and practicality.

It has a classic Lincoln design with a long wheelbase, rounded edges, the big grille up front and a pair of lights each side. There is a lot of panel detailing down the car, adding interest everywhere you look.

Inside, the cabin is exactly as you would expect. Refined, comfortable and well upholstered. There is a lot of space inside, seating is adjustable and comfortable and there is a lot of leather and stitching around.

The driving position is comfortable and commanding. Switches and screens are all high quality and deliver the information you need.

Engine and drivetrain

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair has a couple of engine options. A 2.0-litre turbocharged four cylinder that produces 250 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque and a 2.3-litre turbo four that delivers 295 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

Both use an eight speed automatic to deliver power to the road. AWD is an option.

There is a hybrid version of the Corsair that uses a 2.5-litre four cylinder with an electric motor and CVT transmission and AWD.

All engines have enough power to carry the vehicle and its occupants with ease. Acceleration is smooth and noise is minimal. Each is also relatively frugal given the configuration.

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair is safe too. It’s a Top Safety Pick of the U.S. IIHS and got Five Stars for safety with the NHTSA.

It comes standard with automatic emergency braking, active lane control and blind-spot monitors. Automatic parking assistance, surround-view camera system and heads-up display are all optional.

The 2021 Lincoln Corsair is an excellent evolution of the crossover scheme and makes excellent sense of you want to travel in style without going large.
