Kia have released two teaser sketches of a new compact SUV they are planning to unveil this summer. The sketches don’t give much away but if the production models resemble it, the new model should be very popular indeed!
This is going to be a global release, so everywhere Kia has a presence should get to see it. The design is both standard Kia and modernized so is a good mix of the old and new influences. Having seen the Imagine Concept, I am hoping this new model will reflect some of that awesomeness as well as what we see from the sketch.
So far unnamed, the new SUV looks good. It will apparently be based on the SP Signature concept the company showcased in India earlier this year. I didn’t get to see that concept so only have the sketches to go on. What little is visible from there looks good.
The front end is instantly recognizable as Kia but the tiger nose has been tweaked. The front end looks a lot more chunky, almost Land Rover Freelander. The horizontal line where hood meets grille and lights look good and the individual LED lights have a hint of Alfa Romeo about them. The lower fascia looks more standard but still attractive with even dimensions and a space for either LED running lights or a brake duct.
The rear sketch shows a typical Kia setup again with small screen and rounded proportions. Another horizontal light bar reflects the front while looking modern. A uniquely shaped light pairing adds more modernity. Also like the front, the lower rear fascia is chunky and evenly proportional with a pair of tailpipes for good measure.
Kia have said very little about the new car except a quote from one of their design team.
"We have created a car which stands out everywhere, from the city to the countryside,” said Byung Chul Juh, Head of Kia Styling. "It’s robust yet sporty design will be matched by a wide range of features and technologies that are universally suited to younger buyers in markets around the world. Our new small SUV is a proposition that no other car in its class will match.”
That’s quite a claim. Sure, appealing to a younger demographic will certainly work but delivering a ‘proposition that no other car in its class will match’ is a line in the sand. I hope this new Kia lives up to that as the designs look very cool.
Kia plan to unveil this mysterious new SUV in the summer so we don’t have all that long to wait.
