Kia teases Stonic SUV

640 × 338
Remember seeing those concept drawings of a new crossover from Kia earlier this year? Me neither but apparently there were some floating around the internet. Well those artists’ impressions are to be made real in a new Kia. Called the Stonic, aside from making me thirsty, is making me look forward to more news about this SUV.

The Kia Stonic apparently takes its name from the combination of ‘speedy’ and ‘tonic’. It will compete against other crossovers such as the Nissan Juke, Ford Ecosport and Honda HR-V. If the design, features and quality reflect current Kia values, this is going to be an exciting vehicle to watch.

Kia Stonic
The Kia Stonic will apparently be based on the Kia Rio platform. It will be taller and configured as a crossover SUV though. The artists’ rendering gives us a dramatic crossover with lots of angles and panel detailing but as we know, artistic licence is called that for good reason. While we don’t expect quite such an outlandish design, recent Kia models have been innovative and exciting to say the least.

It isn’t unreasonable to expect a very modern style with fluted panels and sharp angles though. We do expect a modern take on the tiger nose grill, some LED headlights, a sporty looking profile and a nice set of alloy wheels as those are all details that sell cars right now. How much the car will look like the image remains to be seen.

The rear end of the concept has a ring of Alfa Giulia about it combine with a little Jaguar F-Type. If that remains, the rear view alone would sell the car. However, given the quality of the design of recent Kia models, we think Peter Schreyer and crew will deliver us something quite interesting.

The interior rendering is a little more restrained than that of the exterior. It shows a very simple, modern cabin with an unfussy dashboard, touchscreen and controls. Not much else is visible but overall, the simplicity of the design works much in its favour.

Nothing much has been said about the mechanical side of the Stonic so far. As it is based on a Rio, it isn’t unreasonable to suggest that it will offer similar engines, transmission and suspension setup. There have been rumours that AWD will be an option and it would certainly fit the crossover mould but we shall have to wait and see.

Rumour central has the Kia Stonic being shown in Korea in July. Expect a worldwide unveil a short time after that.

In the meantime, Kia of Hamilton have some great deals on new and certified used Kia cars right now. Visit them at 1885 Upper James St, Hamilton ON, L9B 1K8.
