Kia teases new 2021 Optima

Kia teases new 2021 Optima

Kia has released a couple of teaser images in South Korea of the K5, sold as the Optima elsewhere. Having received modest updates since release in 2016, we expected a lot more from this redesign. If those images are anything to go by, Kia delivered!

The current Optima has a great shape and looks quite aero. This new shape is very fastback and even more aero. It’s an inspiring shape with flowing lines, a curved hood, rounded front end with large grilles, a sleek roofline that flows uninterrupted into the trunk or hatch and a very tidy rear end.

That light arrangement looks interesting too. While it’s difficult to make out the main lighting, it is more likely that the illuminated light is a running light rather than headlight. Either way, it looks impressive.

The lower fascia is largely in shadow but looms large. It’s much more angular than the rest of the profile so it will be interesting to see how this looks in proper light. At the rear, an integrated trunk spoiler looks the part while a Dodge-style rear lighting arrangement adds even more to the modernity.

The image of the interior looks pretty good too. It looks like the controls are LED and there is a touchscreen to control everything. The centre console is quite bulky but the finish looks premium. Kia said that we can expect higher levels of luxury in this generation of Optima which is definitely something to look forward to.

The official reveal will be in South Korea in December with production expected for the 2021 model year.

2020 Kia Optima

The current 2020 Kia Optima is a case in point that sedans still have a place in the market. It’s sleek, smooth and has a road presence that manages to be both impressive and understated at the same time. It is one of my favourite sedans on the market right now.

The Optima has attractive styling, capable engines, a very competent transmission and great road manners. It’s firm but comfortable, it grips with little body roll in corners yet offers a plush ride when the road gets bumpy. It’s a tough ask to achieve all that but the Optima seems to manage it with ease.

The 2020 Kia Optima was rated Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and Excellent by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. When a car is designed to transport your family, those two ratings are incredibly important!

With superb warranties, a range of trims and engine options and very competitive pricing, there’s no need to wait for the 2021 model to get something special. Visit Grimsby Kia, 435 South Service Road Grimsby, ON L3M 4E8 to see how good the current Optima is!
