Kia Super Bowl 50 ad helps it stand out from the pack

Kia Super Bowl 50 ad helps it stand out from the pack

The Super Bowl in the U.S. is advertising gold. With an audience in the hundreds of millions, ad spots are hotly contested and exceptionally expensive. Automakers usually carve themselves a piece of that pie and this year, like others, Kia is one of them.
The Kia Super Bowl 50 ad entitled ‘Walken Closet’ uses the star power of the awesome Christopher Walken to tell buyers to stand out from the pack with the new Kia Optima. Using nothing but a great script and a pair of socks, the actor tells a man that he needs to stand out from the crowd and not go through life being uninspired.
It’s a clever ad that builds on the emotive trend that has pervaded advertising of late. He tells the audience ‘There are two kinds of people in this world, those who are content to blend in and walk through life like beige socks. Then there are those who expect more. They’re exciting. They have pizzazz.’
Here is the video.
Alongside the ad, Kia is using social media to promote the new car. It selected 100 social influencers and sent them a pair of those colourful socks. Kia then challenged them to share how they add pizazz to their lives on social media. Kia shared all that on their own Tumblr page.
The ad is very clever and uses a cool actor to good effect. There are few actors as widely regarded as cool as Christopher Walken and Kia has tapped into that. Many of us of a certain age regard him as one of those actors you can’t help but listen to. Which is exactly the point.
‘No one is cooler or as instantly recognizable as Christopher Walken, and on advertising’s biggest stage Kia is out to show the world the all-new Optima delivers a level of refinement and sophistication unlike anything else in the midsize segment,’ said Michael Sprague, COO of Kia Motors America.
He got that right.
Kia won’t be alone in the ad segments during Super Bowl 50 on the 7th February. Other automakers such as Acura, Honda, Hyundai, Mini, Audi, Toyota and Buick have all booked spots during commercials.
