Kia Stinger awarded car of the year in Canada
Posted on March 8, 2019
We already know that the 2019 Kia Stinger is an awesome car but it’s nice to be validated. That’s exactly what the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) did at the Toronto Auto Show earlier this month when they awarded the Kia Stinger Car of the Year.
It won alongside the equally awesome Jaguar I-Pace crossover electric SUV. To be regarded as equal to an automaker with the reputation of Jaguar is praise enough but to be awarded car of the year is something truly special.
The award takes months to put together. Journalists from across Canada spend many, many hours in each finalist vehicle covering many thousands of miles. The vehicles are graded in secret for performance, design, features, technology, economy and value and are scored accordingly.
In all, 55 cars entered and only two won. The 2019 Kia Stinger and the 2019 Jaguar I-Pace.
2019 Kia Stinger
The 2019 Kia Stinger looks amazing, sounds great with the V6 engine and is comfortable to drive and be driven in. It’s a welcome departure from the usual crossover models we are seeing now that proves there is a lot of life left in coupes and fastback designs.
The design is superb. A long low front, angled lights, small grille and lower valance and hood vents on some models. The Stinger sits low, flows from front to the rear and looks fast even when parked.
Inside, the seats are very comfortable and the driving position low and connected to the road. There are few cars around right now not designed for the track that offer this kind of feedback. For once, you can seat adults in the back as long as they aren’t overly tall. The rear seats will fit full size adults but the sloping roof means headroom is slightly limited.
Under that sleek hood is either a turbocharged 2.0-litre four cylinder that produces 255hp or a 3.3-litre twin turbo V6 that produces a whole lot more at 365hp. Using an eight speed automatic to send power to the rear wheels, this is most definitely a driver’s car. Manual and AWD is optional.
The 2019 Kia Stinger is a top performer in terms of price, performance, design and technology. With a 60,000 mile or 5 year warranty, Kia is confident of its manufacturing prowess too. Few other automakers offer such a generous warranty that’s for sure!
