Kia Soul may become a Canada-only EV

Kia Soul may become a Canada-only EV

Rumour central says Kia may be planning to drop the Kia Soul EV from the US, leaving Canada as the only place in North America where you can buy one.

Sources say continued delays with the release of the Kia Soul EV in the US has prompted discussions about abandoning it altogether. Those same sources say Kia is concentrating more on the Niro EV and making sure that is a success rather than the Soul and may not bother with the Soul in the US at all.

It would be a shame of that were the case but at least we can still buy them here in Canada!

2020 Kia Soul EV

The 2020 Kia Soul EV is a small hatchback with distinct style. It’s a thoroughly modern town car with great design, practical interiors and a range of drivetrains, including fully electric.

The 2020 Kia Soul EV has grown slightly but still has the same fun character. The design is modern with tiger nose grille at the lower sill rather than central position, narrow centre grille and narrow lights.

A larger upright windshield offers great visibility and narrow pillars ensures that remains true all round. A slightly sloping roof and high waist makes the interior feel safe and snug.

Inside, the Soul can easily seat four adults in comfort, five with a bit of a squeeze. It is surprisingly spacious inside, which is a real strength of this car. There is even 24 cu-ft of cargo space in back for luggage!

The Kia Soul EV uses a 64kWh battery built into the floor and a 64kW motor driving the front wheels. That combination gives it a range of around 280 miles on a charge using Eco driving mode.

Regenerative braking helps charge the batteries and a paddle shifter allows you to select the strength of regeneration. A neat trick for varying road conditions.

The charging system supports up to 100kW charging which would charge the car back to 80% in 54 minutes. A wall charger at home at 7.2kW will take around nine and a half hours to fully charge.

Like most modern Kia, the Soul is a good drive. It’s light, responsive and has great stability. The steering keeps you in touch with the road and in full control while the acceleration of the electric motor can be a lot of fun.

The 2020 Kia Soul EV is not the fastest EV. It is not the most dynamic and it isn’t the largest. But it is fun and it is affordable. Kia has kept the price reasonable and the range high. Build quality is superb and it is genuinely fun to drive. You would be hard pressed to find a competing EV at this price with this much fun built in!
