Kia planning new range of performance GT trims

640 × 426
Rumour central has Kia working on a series of sporty GT trims for their car range over the next couple of years. The Korean automaker is allegedly looking at offering performance variants of its most popular cars, the Optima, Rio and Forte. Considering we have seen a GT concept both at a show and on the road, this move is a distinct possibility.

The GT trim could include a sportier engine, performance features such as tuned suspension, beefier brakes and trim elements to differentiate it from the others in the range. Given what we learned last week about the Kia Soul Turbo, this move isn’t so far-fetched.

Optima GT
A Kia Optima GT trim is the one most mentioned in connection with these rumours. There is talk of a 2.0-litre four cylinder engine that delivers 245 hp and the transmission and suspension to match. There also might be tuned handling and a sports body kit to make it stand out from the crowd.

Kia Rio GT
A Kia Rio GT was also mentioned. We will be seeing the next version of the little hatchback sometime this fall so it isn’t beyond possibility that a GT trim may feature. We would expect to see a smaller turbo engine in this car, maybe a three cylinder, with more tuned parts to let it sing.

Kia Forte GT
A Kia Forte GT would work pretty well. The Forte is a good seller and would lend itself well to a little performance upgrade. We would think it would experience a similar boost to the Optima GT, with a four cylinder turbo and supporting upgrades, along with some exterior and interior trim.

We don’t actually know if any of these cars will be made, it is just one of the rumours doing the rounds right now. What makes us give it more credence than usual is the link with the GT concept we saw earlier this year and the spy shots of some kind of sports sedan, presumably a production version of the GT, taken a couple of months ago.

As Kia have said themselves, Hyundai is the ‘sensible’ side of the business while Kia has a little more freedom to express themselves. As we have seen with some of the weird and wonderful concepts from the Korean automaker over the past couple of years, creativity is one thing they are definitely not short of!

As always we will keep our ear to the ground and see if we can learn more about Kia’s plans.
