Kia planning a rear wheel drive sports sedan?

Not content with a redesigned Kia Optima or plans for an all-new Cadenza, Kia are also hinting at a rear wheel drive sports sedan too. If that wasn’t enough, they are positioning it to take on the BMW 3-series! While we can’t knock their ambition, we wonder if Kia can really pull that off?
News outfit Reuters has Kia building this new model to help them shift towards a younger, more up and coming auto brand. With Hyundai moving towards premium and executive vehicles, there is a gap in the market for some exceptional value and design in the younger vehicle market. That’s the gap that Kia is hoping to plug.
They want to a younger, sportier vehicle brand. Now that they have changed people’s opinions of their cars and designs, the time is ripe for such a change.
Codename CK
Apparently this new sports sedan is codenamed CK and is begin production in May 2017. The rumours are unsubstantiated right now, but Reuters cited two sources ‘familiar with the matter’. This usually means two designers or consultants on the project or a carefully orchestrated PR campaign with official sanction. Unfortunately, we never know quite which.
However, the Kia CK is allegedly going to be a sports oriented, rear wheel drive sedan with four doors. It is thought to feature three versions at launch with either a 2.0-litre, 2.2-litre or 3-litre engine. Production will begin at Kia’s Seoul plant and will be limited to 60,000 units to begin with.
Stiff competition
Kia’s ambition is laudable. Not only is sister/parent company Hyundai also planning some sportier versions of their Genesis sedans and their own new sports model, there are a lot of top quality sedans of this ilk. A significant one being the new Nissan Maxima. Also, taking on what is the best-selling sedan in Europe as well as a significant seller in North America, the BMW 3-series, is quite the challenge.
The one big advantage that Kia has over BMW is price. The German sedan costs quite the premium and that puts it out of reach of a lot of people. If Kia can produce something of at least a similar quality with the kind of forward-looking design we now expect from Peter Schreyer, the might just do it.
With production slated for just over 15 months’ time, we shouldn’t have long to wait to find out!
In the meantime, why not see Kia’s current range of cars. They offer great design, technology and amazing value for money. Visit Kia of Hamilton, 1885 Upper James St, Hamilton ON, L9B 1K8 today!
