I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that the Kia Optima was awarded Top Safety Pick rating by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. That score has been updated to Top Safety Pick Plus now it has its new headlights. That is fantastic news for this great Kia!
The new lighting upgrades the Kia Optima from ‘poor’ rating for its lights to ‘acceptable’. Two new light setups have been introduced, one is graded ‘good’ the other ‘acceptable’. Giving it an overall ‘acceptable’ rating which was enough to boost the car up to Top Safety Pick Plus.
One headlight system is comprised of LED projector lights. They will be available on the Kia Optima SX and are the lights regarded as ‘acceptable’. An upgraded variant of the same lights available in the Optima SX Limited and SX Technology trim was measured as ‘good’.
Kia Optima manufactured after April 2017 will feature the new lighting system.
2017 Kia Optima
The 2017 Kia Optima hasn’t been available for all that long but has been very well received and reviewed by motoring press and owners. Redesigned in 2016, this year’s model has been refined and improved in all the right places. Those new lights feature of course and new optional packages are now available.
The sedan looks great. It is a very modern design that reflects Kia and the direction the company is going. The shape is sleek and has a nice flow. The tiger nose is present of course, flanked by angled lights and curved hood. The long flowing roof and (optional) panoramic sunroof give the Optima a very modern feel.
Inside, the cabin is very well put together. Even the base LX trim doesn’t look or feel cheap but the SXL is where the real comfort and luxury is at. Remove the badge from the steering wheel and you could easily image you are in a Bavarian car. Space is generous, equipment plentiful and the entire experience is a pleasurable one.
There are three engine options, a 1.6-litre turbo that produces 178 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0-litre turbo that produces 245 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and a normally aspirated 2.4-litre that generates 185 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. All use an automatic transmission to send power to the front wheels.
The drive is quiet and refined. The suspension well balanced. As this is a good-sized sedan, cruising is a breeze while cornering is relatively level and direct. It would have no problem getting you to the store or to work or crossing the country on a road trip.
With a range of trim options and features, there is a lot on offer for a very modest price. With few compromises, a design that looks and feels better than ever and three decent engines, there are a lot of reasons to consider a 2017 Kia Optima as your next car.
