Kia Niro electric may be coming soon

Kia have hinted that their newest compact, the Kia Niro may come as an electric car soon. Even though the newest Kia hasn’t even hit dealerships yet, the Korean automaker is already considering widening the offering to include an all-electric variant.

The Kia Niro showcased at Chicago earlier this year but had been mooted and hinted long before that. It’s already a hybrid, with a 1.6-litre gasoline engine and an electric motor paired up together. The Niro uses an all-new chassis that was designed specifically for this car and its Hyundai sibling, the Ioniq.

The chassis has apparently been designed with ‘electrification in mind’ according to Kia. Presumably that means light, stiff and has room to integrate an electric motor and hide the batteries where they don’t take up too much space.

If the Kia Niro does come in electric form it will aim directly at the new range of long range electrics and the Toyota Prius. With EVs now breaking the 200 mile range mark, this new Kia is going to have to compete or beat that range to be able to compete.

2017 Kia Niro
The 2017 Kia Niro is an all new vehicle dubbed ‘Hybrid Utility Vehicle’. It’s a little less SUV and a little more crossover but should cover both markets well enough to be a viable contender.

The design is attractive, with a rounded profile, angled lights, the Kia tiger nose grille, fog lights, raked windshield and long sloped roof. It looks very ‘normal’ and that works in its favour.

On the inside, the interior uses a typical Kia cabin. Nice materials, rounded edges, subtle trim elements, a tidy dashboard and a feeling of quality throughout. Visibility is good all round thanks to the crossover style, the driving position is comfortable and there is plenty of room for passengers and cargo.

The real news is under the skin. The 2017 Kia Niro is a front wheel drive vehicle with a 1.6-litre gasoline engine connected to an electric motor with a 1.56-kWh lithium-polymer battery pack. Combined output is 146 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The batteries are hidden under the rear seats so as not to compromise the interior space.

The 2017 Kia Niro is a great looking car that has massive potential. It is much more accessible than the competition and has few of the compromises too. The interior is top quality and the engine combination is going to be superb. The new Niro should be hitting the Car Nation Canada dealership network sometime early 2017.
